Designing your dream engagement ring – the dos and don’ts

Designing your dream engagement ring – the dos and don’ts

Our bespoke service has helped so many people’s dreams come true. It’s particularly popular amongst soon-to-be engaged couples, with those popping the question coming to us to design an engagement ring that their partner will adore, and couples visiting post-proposal to create that extra special piece together.

Whatever your journey to our door, our bespoke service is just that – unique to you both and your route to your very own one-of-a-kind engagement ring. Designing your dream engagement ring, either with or without your partner, is no walk in the park. There are a number of dos and don’ts to bear in mind during the process, here are the rules you should be aware of…

DO take note of their style

While you may think you know your partner’s style, doing some discreet, well-timed research will ensure no stone is left unturned in your quest for the perfect engagement ring design.

Pay close attention to what your partner wears daily. Do they favour the classic, modern, vintage or minimal style? Their existing jewellery will also reveal what they’ll truly love. You should consider how they live their lives too, and how the engagement ring will fit into their lifestyle. If your partner is particularly active, a low-set stone and sturdy band may be more practical than a delicate setting.

Thinking about what’s important to your partner is another must when designing a bespoke engagement ring. The environmentally conscious bride for example will love our choice of ethical and recycled materials.

DON’T forget to add meaning

The best engagement rings don’t necessarily have the biggest gems and the most precious metals, they have meaning. The engagement ring itself already carries lots of meaningful symbolism, with everything from its shape and stone to the finger it’s placed on telling its own romantic story as Symbol Sage explains:

“The circle shape of the ring signifies an equal relationship, with no end and no beginning. This represents everlasting love that goes beyond this life… The finger traditionally reserved for the engagement ring (ring finger of the left hand) was believed to have a vein that ran directly to the heart. This was called the vena amoris and many believed that wearing the engagement ring on that finger signified love as a connection to one’s heart.”

Use your own personal story as inspiration to build on this symbolism. Incorporate elements that reflect your relationship. This could be a birthstone, hidden engraving or design feature that pays tribute to your story so far.

Remember, an engagement ring is less about following trends and more about celebrating your love for one another.

DO prioritise quality over size

Quality matters; this is after all a jewellery piece that your partner will wear day in, day out. While it used to be common practice to save three month’s salary for an engagement ring, modern day couples have bigger fish to fry!

Quality should be your main focus, with a smaller, higher quality stone always meaning more than chasing carat weight. With better quality comes enhanced longevity, with a piece that will age beautifully, and be worn for a lifetime. For the perfect balance between budget, aesthetics and sustainability, explore the use of lab grown diamonds.

DON’T do anything last minute

When custom designing an engagement ring, planning is everything, and you’ll certainly need time on your hands. Whether buying a beautiful piece from one of our collections, or designing something one-of-a-kind, we take great pride in every aspect of its creation.

Be sure to plan ahead when going bespoke; custom designs take time, often weeks or months, so don’t leave it until the last minute. You should also set yourself a realistic budget. Going bespoke doesn’t mean being extravagant. We’ll work with you to decipher your budget early and help you stick to it every step of the way.
