We've all at some point looked up our birthstones or at least looked up a loved one's birthstone and how many variations did we find? Over the years, companies have put their gems into the mix to boost sales and caused confusion amongst the masses.
We want to return some order and not just confirm the correct gem for your birth month but explore the origins of birthstones and team your month with one of our signature pieces.
So where did birthstones come from?
Research shows they can trace the origin of birthstones all the way back to the Breastplate of Aaron, as detailed in the Book of Exodus in the Bible. The Breastplate boasted 12 unique gemstones that represented the 12 tribes of Israel.
Fast forward to the 1st and 5th century AD when scholars, Flavius Josephus and St. Jerome, associated the 12 breastplate gems with the 12 signs of the zodiac. Initially, the thinking was for each person to own all 12 birthstones and wear each gem on the associated month.
Our modern take on this tradition came about in the 18th century in Poland when Jewish gem traders began to market each gemstone based on a person’s birth month. In 1912 the National Association of Jewelers solidified the practice in the United States.
