How many times can I get my ring resized?

How many times can I get my ring resized? - Dainty London

Whether you’ve ordered the wrong size or your body shape has changed making your ring too small or too big, resizing is a great option that will help you achieve the perfect fit. Here at Dainty London, we work with you from the very outset to ensure your ring fits just as it should. If you need your ring resized, however, there are a few things that you should be aware of.

In this blog post, we answer the all-important questions surrounding ring resizing, including what the process involves, the limitations of ring resizing, and how many times you can use resizing to your advantage without damaging your precious piece.

What does the ring resizing process involve?

The ring resizing process isn’t as complicated as it sounds, especially if you are calling on an expert jeweller to undertake the resizing, which is one thing we’d certainly recommend! Here Jewelry Notes details how ring resizing works:

“To increase the size of your ring, the jeweler will spread it as much as needed after cutting it and will then add a new piece of metal to fill the gap. Decreasing a ring’s size works in a similar fashion: The jeweler will cut out a strip from the ring and narrow the band by joining the two ends together. After the resizing is done, the jeweler will put your ring back together by soldering the band where it was cut.”

Resizing can be completed using a machine or by hand, the latter of which is generally costlier but delivers a more accurate finish. Depending on your resizing requirements, extra metal may need to be added to the band to achieve your desired size.

How long does resizing take?

The timescale of your ring resize depends entirely on the jeweller you choose. The resizing process itself can be completed in as little as a day, but many factors may influence the timeframe of your ring’s return.

Whether you need your ring made bigger or smaller, the placement of stones, the presence of any engravings and the current thickness of the ring’s band can all impact the ring resizing timescale.

How big or small can a ring be made?

As a rule of thumb, you should alter the ring’s size by no more than 3 or 4 sizes if you wish to make your ring bigger. Gemstone jewellery with pave settings, however – where a collection of smaller gems are set across the band leading to a feature stone in the centre – have a greater risk of being damaged during resizing, with stones likely to become loose or completely detached if the band is altered too much.

Those looking to make their ring smaller using resizing have greater flexibility, particularly if the ring features a thick, solid band. Rings can be made smaller by several sizes. Again, designs that feature stones across the band are more likely to become damaged.

How many times can a ring be resized?

Whilst most rings (including gold, platinum, silver and titanium) are suitable for resizing, there is a limit to how many times a ring can be altered. Every ring however is different, with the number of times the design can be safely and successfully resized varying dramatically.

Having your ring resized just two or three times throughout its lifetime will ensure it looks its best, fits like a dream, and maintains its structural integrity and quality.

There are alternatives to ring resizing if you’ve already altered the size of your ring a few times or you’d prefer not to resize your ring permanently. Plastic resizers and ring guards provide temporary fixes for ill-fitting rings, especially if your loose- or tight-fitting ring is the result of seasonal changes.
